Hadji Jalili was a well known master craftsman from Marand, a small town near Tabriz, Iran.
This is a superfine prayer rug and has approximately 900,000 knots per square metre. The mehrab has a rust background, its vault being supported by two graceful columns. Both, at the top and at the base of the panels, arabesques adorn the vault. A chain hanging from the apex down to the centre of the prayer arch holds a lamp. The face of the master weaver is seen at the base of the columns.
This masterpiece was woven upside down so that the sheen of the rug should face Mecca.
